The basics
Three numbers to know
01Our fee
What the consultation costs in full.
02Your Medicare rebate
What Medicare pays back, if you’re eligible.
03Your gap fee
The difference—this is your out-of-pocket cost.
When the gap is $0In some cases the rebate covers the full fee. That’s what “bulk billed” means: nothing to pay out of pocket.
Your likely cost
What you’ll pay
Out-of-pocket costs vary between specialties, and we’ll discuss yours before you book.
Most specialist and allied health appointments$50–$100Gap fees are typically modest and usually fall within this range.
Psychiatry appointmentsMay be higherSpecialties in high demand—including behavioural and developmental psychiatry, and ADHD and autism assessments—may carry higher out-of-pocket fees.
Eligibility
When your appointment may be bulk billed
You may have nothing to pay out of pocket if you:
- Live in a regional or rural area, at least 15 km by road from a psychiatristPsychiatry appointments only
- Are referred through an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service or Indigenous health centre
- Are a resident of an aged care facility
- Hold a pension card
Eligibility is determined by Medicare and may change. We’ll confirm whether it applies before your appointment.
If cost is a barrier for you, tell us—we’d rather discuss the available options than have you go without care.
Using a Health Care Plan? For psychology, chronic disease management, dietetics or diabetes education, send a copy with your referral—it affects what you can claim.See what to send →Psychology sessions are capped at 10 per calendar year under a mental health care plan. Psychiatry medication reviews are charged separately and need a new GP referral.

When you’re charged, and when Medicare pays you back
- 01
When you confirm your appointment
We charge the full amount upfront—the Medicare-rebatable portion plus your gap fee.
- 02
After your appointment
We bill Medicare directly on your behalf. There’s nothing for you to claim.
- 03
Once Medicare processes the claim
Your rebate is paid straight into your nominated bank account.
Check your Medicare bank detailsMake sure your nominated bank account is registered with Medicare, or your rebate can’t be paid to you.
If you need to cancel or rescheduleCancellation terms can depend on the service and appointment. We’ll provide the applicable notice period and any fee before you confirm your booking.
Before you commit
You’ll get this in writing
Once we’ve received your referral, we’ll send you an estimate before you commit to anything. It sets out:
- Our total fee for the consultation
- The Medicare rebate you can expect, if you’re eligible
- Your maximum out-of-pocket cost
Your actual cost may be lower than the estimate—never higher.
A clear upper limit
Why we quote a maximum rather than an exact figure
A few things can move the final number, and some of them we can’t know until Medicare processes your claim. So we quote the highest it could be, and you’re never charged more than that.
Appointment typeFirst appointments cost more than reviews
An initial consultation includes a full assessment, so it’s longer and priced accordingly. Follow-up appointments are lower.
Medicare Safety NetYour actual gap may be lower
If you have reached your Medicare Safety Net threshold, Medicare may pay a higher benefit for eligible services. Medicare determines eligibility and the benefit paid.
Other providers
Costs we can’t quote for
Your estimate covers your consultation with the specialist. It doesn’t cover anything they may ask you to arrange separately. We don’t quote for these because the fees are set by the provider you’re referred to.

Ask us before you book
We’re happy to talk through fees before you commit to an appointment, and your specialist can go into more detail during your consultation.
