SUMMARY

What is virtual inpatient care with Mackay Hospital and Health Service?

Mackay Hospital and Health Service, in partnership with Telecare, is piloting a new virtual inpatient care program to enhance the delivery of patient care through virtual healthcare services. As part of this initiative, a Senior Medical Officer will be available virtually to support staff at Sarina, Dysart, Moranbah, and Collinsville during times when an on-site doctor is not available.

The virtual physician will work closely with local healthcare teams to assist with patient admissions, clinical reviews, and provide ad-hoc medical support, ensuring continuity of care and timely access to medical expertise closer to home.

What Patients Can Expect

Patients utilising the virtual inpatient care program will receive care that meets the same high standards as traditional in-person services. Participation requires the patient to consent in order for them to be managed virtually.

  • Upon arrival at the hospital, patients will be assessed via video consultation by the admitting doctor.
  • Daily ward rounds will be conducted virtually to monitor patient progress.
  • Nursing staff can contact the virtual physician at any time via phone, with virtual consultations arranged as needed.

This model ensures that patient care is not compromised—in fact, it enables patients to receive timely treatment closer to home, reducing the need for transfers and improving overall access to medical support.
